Electricity storage is a rather complex operation that is still the subject of several scientific studies. Due to poor electricity storage methods, the quantity of electricity is now decreasing. The storage means currently available have their limits. As a result, innovations are essential to effectively preserve electricity in the future.

Among the various means of storing electricity are hydraulic dams. These can be pumped or released as required. However, the use of hydraulic dams for electricity storage is limited if we talk about energy storage problems. In single-family homes, an interesting solution is now available to households: water heaters. These keep the heat of the water heated at night for daytime use. In addition, there are the batteries. The latter are equipped with a high performance allowing the storage of electricity for the power supply of an electric vehicle for example. These batteries are now available in different models on the market. Their launch represents a real industrial challenge.

Future prospects

To solve problems related to energy transport and storage technologies, researchers are opening up new horizons. The idea is to optimize electricity storage methods in order to minimize any loss. As a first step, the energy density of lithium batteries should be increased. To do this, the inventors plan to replace graphite electrodes with silicon electrodes with keys. This guarantees a high autonomy and a fast recharging. Some researchers are turning to lithium batteries. However, since it is a rare and expensive metal, the option thus presents an economic barrier.

Mechanical electricity storage technology

To store energy from renewable sources, there are several storage methods and the same applies to electricity. Mechanical storage refers mainly to pumping stations. These are gravitation storage technologies. They include water reservoirs as well as piping and pumping systems. These different elements allow the transfer of water from the lower tank to the upper tank during off-peak hours. During peak hours, the operating principle of the stations is similar to that of traditional hydroelectric power plants. Noting that there are two types of pumping, namely input pumping stations and pumped energy transfer stations.
